Job summary

The City of Everett in Washington seeks a City Auditor to serve as the municipality's chief accounting officer, directing internal controls, auditing operations, and financial reporting to ensure fiscal health and transparency.

Reporting to executive leadership and the CFO, the role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws while safeguarding municipal assets, with oversight of budgeting, reconciliations, and procurement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field (Master's or CPA preferred).
• Minimum 5 years of municipal finance or accounting experience with supervisory responsibility.
• Certification as a Massachusetts Governmental Accountant (CGA) or ability to obtain within 3 years.
• Knowledge of municipal accounting principles, internal auditing standards, and compliance.
• Strong proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, and municipal software.

Responsibilities

• Strategic oversight of accounting operations, statutory compliance, and city accounting systems.
• Direct closings, reconciliations with Treasurer/Collector, and procurement compliance.
• Supervise budget processes and the use of municipal financial software.
• Lead internal audit functions, assess risk, and update accounting policies.
• Prepare and submit state and federal financial reports, including tax schedules.
• Supervise accounting staff and train department heads on procedures.
• Liaise with external auditors and state/federal oversight agencies.
