Job summary

The City of Everett is seeking a City Auditor to serve as the chief accounting officer, directing internal controls, auditing, and reporting to maintain fiscal health and transparency. You will work closely with the Mayor and CFO to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

Responsibilities include leading accounting operations, overseeing closings, maintaining ledgers, supervising staff, and liaising with external auditors and agencies to safeguard city assets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree or CPA preferred
• Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible municipal finance or accounting experience, including supervisory roles
• Certification as a Massachusetts Governmental Accountant (or ability to obtain within 3 years)

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership of the City’s accounting operations and ensure compliance with applicable laws and standards
• Direct and maintain city accounting systems, ledgers, and financial postings
• Oversee closings and reconciliation of key accounts in coordination with Treasurer/Collector
• Supervise budgeting, transfers, and city financial software usage
• Interpret and enforce fiscal regulations; train department heads on procedures
• Lead internal audit functions, risk assessments, and internal controls
• Prepare and submit state/federal financial reports and tax rate recapitulation
• Manage accounts payable and procurement compliance
• Monitor accounting standards and update city policies
• Liaise with external auditors and state/federal agencies
• Conduct special analyses and supervise staff development
