Job summary

University of Alaska is seeking a Circulation Student Assistant for the Anchorage campus. You will assist with maintaining the library collection, support circulation staff, and help patrons with questions while following established procedures.

Hours are around 20 per week during semesters, with potential for up to 40 hours during breaks. Applicants must be enrolled at UA with necessary credits and meet GPA requirements.

Qualifications

  • Follow instructions closely, paying particular attention to detail.
  • Work independently after training, without direct supervision. Self-motivation, initiative, and diligence are essential.
  • Manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, prioritize, and work accurately with frequent interruptions.
  • Communicate clearly and accurately verbally and in writing with patrons, staff, and supervisors.
  • Accurately organize materials using various filing systems (call numbers, alphabetical, etc.). This includes the ability to learn and develop a thorough understanding of the Library of Congress Classification system.
  • Provide quality customer service, helping patrons and answering questions whenever necessary.

Job description

The UAA/APU Consortium Library supports the educational and research programs of the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University and serves as a major research library for Southcentral Alaska.
The Circulation Department at the Consortium Library is responsible for the maintenance of the collection for public access, circulating materials into and out of the library, and providing a first point of contact for general patron questions.
Circulation student assistants perform a variety of tasks necessary for maintaining the collection and provide support services to Circulation staff and to other library departments. Student assistants DO NOT staff the Circulation Desk, but do work in various areas throughout the library daily.
Although personal preferences will be considered, the Consortium Library has extensive hours, and student assistants will be expected and scheduled to work around their classes within these hours:
Monday-Friday 8am to 8pm
Saturday-Sunday 10am to 8pm
Student assistants will be scheduled to work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during semesters, with the possibility of working up to 40 hours per week during the summer and winter breaks.

Special skills/knowledge: Must be able to physically reach overhead and crouch/squat down; push and pull loaded book carts; lift 25 lbs with or without accommodations; stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. To be eligible for student employment at UAA, each applicant must:
Be enrolled in UAA with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
For employment between semesters, have successfully completed six or more UA credit hours in the preceding semester and demonstrate plans to enlist for six or more credit hours in the next semester; and
Not work hours that interfere with class attendance; and
Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage, AK. This is a student employee position. Pay is $13.11/hour.
