North Greenville University is seeking a Circulation Assistant to support the circulation staff in keeping the Hester Memorial Library open, assisting patrons, and ensuring smooth daily operations.

The role involves opening/closing, checking in/out material, maintaining a quiet environment, guiding patrons by phone/email, training work-study students, and coordinating with staff on tours, mail, reserves, and donor books.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent with computer skills.
  • Desire to provide outstanding service to library patrons.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn library management system, filing system and electronic resources.

Responsibilities

  • Open/close library as schedule requires.
  • Check in/out library materials and maintain order.
  • Maintain a neat, quiet atmosphere within the library.
  • Assist patrons in person, by phone, and email with library information and printing.
  • Direct students to the appropriate staff for assistance.
  • Train and schedule work-study staff and maximize their use.
  • Cooperate with Circulation staff and Financial Aid for work-study oversight.
  • Report maintenance and computer issues as needed.
  • Assist in processing daily mail, reserves, and honors projects.
  • Assist in the donated books process.
  • Assist in keeping equipment and facility reservations current.
  • Conduct 5 to 10 minute library tours as scheduled.
  • Meet institutional expectations and other duties as assigned.

Department: LibraryPosition Summary: The Circulation Assistant is a full-time position that works with other circulation staff to make sure the Circulation department of the library is always manned, patrons receive the appropriate assistance, and Circulation runs smoothly.ResponsibilitiesResponsible for opening/closing of the Library as schedule requiresEnsure that all library material is properly checked in and checked outMaintain a neat, orderly, and quiet atmosphere within the libraryAssist students in person, by phone, and email with library information and printingDirect students to the appropriate, qualified person for assistanceAssist in training and scheduling workstudy staff, and insuring that workstudy staff are used to their fullest potentialCooperate with Circulation staff/ Financial Aid in overseeing workstudy staffReport maintenance and computer issues as neededAssist in processing daily mail, reserves, and honors projectsAssist in the donated books processAssist in keeping equipment and facility reservations correct and up to dateConduct 5 to 10 minute physical library tours for students as scheduledMeet institutional expectationsOther duties as assigned.Responsible to the Librarian on duty.Opportunity for AdvancementCurrent library staff will be given consideration for available Librarian positions provided they are a good fit for the specific position and have attained the required MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited institution.Physical RequirementsVisual Abilities: Read written and electronic documents and use a computer system.Hearing: Hear well enough to communicate with co-workers and patrons in person and via telephoneDexterity: Grasping, feeling, handling library materials, writing, typing, and using the telephone, copier, and computer systemsMobility: Will need to operate office machines, move between library departments and work in the stacks frequently, occasionally using a step stool, and move between other buildings on campus occasionallyTalking: Frequently convey detailed or important information about library services and resources accurately and in a manner that can be understoodLifting, Pulling, and Pushing: Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and 20 pounds frequently, lift and/or move up to 20 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequentlyCognitive/Emotional: Ability to critically think and concentrate, ability to remain calm when working with frustrated or anxious patrons, must be able to respond quickly to changes in conditions 75 to 100% of the timeWorking RelationshipsThe Circulation Assistant position reports to the Dean of the Libraries and works under the supervision of the Librarian on duty. This position collaborates with other library staff and works with library patrons including faculty, staff, students, and the community.Work ScheduleHester Memorial Library hours of operation are Monday to Thursday 7:30 a.m. to midnight, Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday noon to 5 p.m., Sunday 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Hours may vary during holidays and when classes are not in session.Primary work schedule 35.5-39 hours per week depending on need. Schedule includes 30 minute unpaid meal break. There is some flexibility within the schedule as long as there is coverage.T 4pm to midnight (10 to 6 some Tuesdays as needed)W 4pm to midnightTh 10 to 5:30F 7:15am to 4pmSat 11:45am to 5pmThis position requires working two nights per week closing. The scheduled night may vary depending on staffing needs.
