Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a Central Plant Operator to operate and monitor chilled water systems across campus facilities. You will perform inspections, diagnostics, and maintenance, ensuring reliable delivery and regulatory compliance while coordinating with contractors and inspectors.

The role requires a strong HVAC background, safety awareness, and ability to work under demanding schedules. This is a Regular, day shift position with on-site work.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 3 years of HVAC experience required.
• Graduation from an accredited vocational school in HVAC is strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Operate reciprocating and centrifugal chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and related systems.
• Inspect equipment and record operating data including temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemical levels, refrigerants, and oil levels.
• Inspect, test, calibrate, and maintain control systems including sensors, relays, control panels, and transmitters.
• Assist with preventive and corrective maintenance, modifications, replacements, and installations on chillers, pumps, motors, and support systems.
• Provide 24/7/365 alarm monitoring and operational support for campus buildings.
• Assist inspectors and contractors on projects and surveys.
• Maintain accurate records and interpret blueprints and specifications.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
