Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a Major Systems Supervisor for Chilled Water Operations to lead safe, reliable operation of the chilled water plants and distribution system. Provide technical direction and 24/7 oversight to ensure continuous service for campus and hospital customers.

The role requires supervising Central Plant Operators, coordinating with maintenance, monitoring BAS/SCADA, and driving improvements while upholding EH&S requirements and safety culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field with four years of relevant experience; or equivalent substitutions.
• Associate's degree with six years of relevant experience; or accredited technical/vocational program with seven years relevant experience.
• Work experience may substitute for education requirements.
• EPA Section 608 Technician Certification (Type II or Universal) preferred.
• OSHA 30-hour Certification or equivalent safety training (preferred).
• Ability to operate in a 24/7 utility environment with a focus on safety and reliability.
• Strong knowledge of chilled water plant operations and utility systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead safe, efficient operation of chilled water plants and distribution system.
• Supervise Central Plant Operators, assign work, train, and evaluate performance.
• Monitor operations via BAS/SCADA; respond to alarms and outages.
• Oversee distribution operations, valve alignments, startups, and restorations.
• Ensure EH&S compliance and promote safety culture.
• Maintain operational records, reports, and performance metrics.
• Coordinate support for projects, outages, and construction activities.
• Drive process improvements to boost reliability and efficiency.
