Job summary

UAB is seeking a Central Plant Operator to operate, maintain, and monitor campus chilled-water systems across Central Plants and satellite facilities. You will handle inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and coordination with contractors to ensure reliable, compliant operation.

The role requires HVAC experience, familiarity with CMMS, and safe-work practices. Shift work with day/night rotations and potential overtime is expected to meet campus needs.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years HVAC experience.
• Graduation from an accredited HVAC vocational program encouraged.
• EPA 608 Refrigerant Handling preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor chillers, pumps, cooling towers and related systems with computerized controls.
• Maintain continuous chilled-water delivery for campus and hospital buildings with 24/7 monitoring.
• Record operating data: temperatures, pressures, flow, chemicals, refrigerants, oil; keep performance docs.
• Inspect and calibrate control systems; troubleshoot using diagnostic tools.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on chillers, pumps, motors, and mechanical systems.
• Support water-treatment by monitoring test results and adjusting chemical feed rates.
• Coordinate inspections and assist inspectors on pressure-vessel surveys; support contractors on projects.
• Maintain accurate records, interpret blueprints and manufacturer specs for HVAC systems.
• Notify management of issues affecting distribution and plant operations.
