Job summary

Montgomery Public Schools is seeking a competent Laborer for the Child Nutrition Department to diagnose, repair, install, and maintain refrigeration and cafeteria equipment on site. The role emphasizes safety, reliability, and strong customer service to support daily meal operations in our facilities.

The position requires a high school diploma, a valid Alabama driver’s license, and the ability to read blueprints and follow complex instructions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate's degree or certification in refrigeration preferred but not required.
• Possess and maintain valid Alabama driver's license.
• Experience working with cafeteria/restaurant equipment.
• MPS insurable driving record required.
• Background clearance through FBI and ABI processes.
• Subject to drug screening within Board policy.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of food service (kitchen) and refrigeration systems.
• Install new food service (kitchen) and refrigeration equipment and systems when required.
• Relocate and expand existing food service (kitchen) and refrigeration systems as required.
• Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
• Provide outstanding customer service and use positive interpersonal communicational skills.
• Make decisions and perform all tasks in accordance with Montgomery Public Schools' Organizational Values.
• Ensure compliance with Board rules and applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
• Perform other incidental tasks or services consistent with the job goal of this position.
• Perform all scheduled preventive maintenance and cleaning on all food service (kitchen) and refrigeration equipment as needed.
• Detect needed repairs on equipment following established inspection procedures.
• Respond to emergency calls as needed.
