CareScout Insurance, Chief Underwriter and Operations Director

Position Location

Remote (Based in Richmond, Virginia)

Your Role

Reporting to the CEO of CareScout Insurance, the Chief Underwriter and Operations Director will be responsible for ensuring that underwriting practices are efficient, responsible, and align with company risk tolerances, pricing assumptions, and applicable reinsurance treaties. The role involves managing underwriting guidelines, processing, and decisioning for insurance products, leading staff in a matrix environment, and providing strategic direction on underwriting matters and operational concerns.

What you will be doing
  1. Lead and collaborate on strategic initiatives, including setting the underwriting strategy, philosophy, guidelines, and procedures.
  2. Provide thought leadership and technical oversight on underwriting by partnering with Medical, actuarial, and operational teams.
  3. Manage underwriting risk assessment processes, balancing business considerations with distributor and customer interests.
  4. Manage and direct underwriting staff, overseeing workflow, resourcing, and training.
  5. Drive data-driven decision-making in underwriting guidelines and procedures.
  6. Lead research on underwriting advancements to improve risk assessment and process efficiency.
  7. Drive improvements and automation in underwriting, including AI capabilities.
  8. Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and manage risk exposure.
  9. Work with compliance and actuarial teams on legal and industry standards.
  10. Participate in product development and train distribution partners on underwriting processes.
  11. Manage outsourced relationships and represent CareScout in industry organizations.
What you bring
  • 10+ years of long-term care underwriting experience, including handling complex LTC risks or other morbidity products.
  • Industry designations such as FALU, FLMI, or CLU, and a bachelor's degree.
  • Expertise in mortality and morbidity risk factors.
  • Experience leading underwriting policies and programs.
  • Understanding of HIPAA, reinsurer relationships, and state regulations.
  • Strong business judgment, results-oriented, with excellent negotiation and relationship skills.
  • Ability to inspire change and lead in a collaborative, matrixed organization.
  • Industry reputation for integrity and credibility.
