Job summary

UMass Boston is seeking a Director of Systems Engineering to lead the enterprise infrastructure, including Windows/Linux, virtualization, storage, backup, and cloud-related services. The role is hands-on and strategic, guiding a team and contributing technically for reliability, security, and scalability across the university's on-campus environment.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or related field.
At least ten years of progressively responsible experience designing, implementing, and operating complex enterprise infrastructure environments.
At least five years of experience leading technical staff or major infrastructure functions; supervisory experience preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead as both people leader and hands-on senior technical contributor.
Strong prioritization, decision-making, delegation, staff development, and accountability skills.
Excellent communication, collaboration, customer service, and documentation abilities.
Experience with Windows or Linux systems, cloud infrastructure, virtualization, identity and authentication, storage and disaster recovery, automation, and observability.

Responsibilities

Lead and develop Systems Engineering team with clear responsibilities, ownership, performance expectations, and cross-training.
Develop and maintain multiyear roadmap for systems infrastructure, hybrid cloud, automation, resilience, and lifecycle replacement.
Establish standards and architecture to promote security, reliability, scalability, interoperability, and cost effectiveness.
Collaborate with Information Security, Research Computing, and academic units to provide secure, scalable services for education and research missions.
