Job summary

UMass Boston is seeking a Director of Systems Engineering to lead the architecture, reliability, security, and operation of the University’s enterprise infrastructure. The Director leads and develops the Systems Engineering team while also serving as a senior technical contributor.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or related field.
• Ten+ years designing, implementing, and operating complex enterprise infrastructure.
• Five+ years leading technical staff; supervisory experience preferred.
• Ability to lead people and contribute technically.
• Knowledge of enterprise infra tech: Windows/Linux, cloud, virtualization, identity, storage, backup, automation, monitoring, security.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the Systems Engineering team; establish responsibilities and service ownership.
• Develop multiyear roadmap for systems infrastructure, hybrid cloud, and automation.
• Set technical standards promoting security, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Communicate strategy and performance to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Manage budgets, contracts, licensing, cloud usage, and vendor performance.
• Oversee reliable operation of enterprise infrastructure and DR readiness.
• Provide hands‑on senior technical input for complex issues and incidents.
• Lead major implementations, upgrades, migrations, and automation initiatives.
• Foster an inclusive, collaborative culture and cross‑functional partnerships.
