Job summary

National Life Group, an established insurer, seeks a Chief Risk Officer to lead enterprise risk management and governance. You will define risk appetite, oversee ORSA, and advise senior leadership and the Board on material risk exposures.

The role requires guiding risk strategy across functions, coordinating with internal audit, compliance, and legal, and ensuring a culture of accountability. Office presence is required four days a week in Montpelier, VT.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• 15+ years of progressively responsible leadership in financial services, preferably life insurance/annuities.
• Experience reporting to a Board of Directors and committees.
• Strong analytical, communication, and governance skills.
• Onsite hybrid schedule with four in-office days per week (Mon–Thu).

Responsibilities

• Own the company’s risk appetite and limit structure; refine and ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
• Lead the Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) end-to-end with executive sign-off.
• Advise COO/CEO and the Board on actions to manage material risk exposures.
• Monitor key risk indicators, industry trends, and regulatory developments; lead timely responses.
• Chair enterprise risk committee and report risk profile to leadership and the Board.
• Champion governance, ethics, and accountability across the risk function.
