Description
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for continuous improvement in all assigned operational areas of responsibility. The COO should be an accessible leader who can foster the development, creation, and implementation of systems that enhance strong and effective partnerships within the hospital's day-to-day activities. This role involves collaborating with senior leadership to develop, coordinate, and execute short and long-term objectives that support the organization's strategic agenda.
The responsibilities of the COO include, but are not limited to:
- Cultural Alignment: Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the hospital's mission, vision, and values in leadership behaviors, practices, and decisions.
- Leadership: An engaged, transparent, innovative, and trusted leader with excellent leadership skills, business acumen, and the ability to effectively manage and supervise multidisciplinary teams.
- Operations Management: Overseeing day-to-day operations of various hospital departments as defined by the CEO.
- Planning & Budgeting: Coordinating facility and program planning, preparing budgets, and administering hospital policies.
- Representation: Representing the hospital at professional, civic, and governmental functions.
- Compliance & Quality: Ensuring the hospital meets regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer, Clinical Director, and Chief Regulatory Officer.
- Staffing & Recruitment: Working with the CEO to create an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining qualified hospital employees.
- Performance Improvement: Leading teams to analyze and promote organization-wide performance improvement activities.
- Service Development: Assisting in planning new services aligned with the hospital's strategic mission to generate additional revenue.
- Cost Management: Managing costs by identifying opportunities to eliminate non-value-added expenses in line with financial objectives.
- Meetings & Reviews: Participating in monthly operational reviews and other leadership meetings as necessary.
This position reports directly to the CEO, and in the CEO's absence, the COO may be required to interpret hospital policy and provide guidance.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a related field from an accredited institution
- Master of Healthcare Administration or MBA with Healthcare emphasis required
Experience:
- Minimum of ten (10) years of management experience, including roles such as COO or Vice President within an integrated healthcare entity, with thorough knowledge of healthcare management principles.
