Job summary

Stanford University Libraries is seeking a full-time Head of Conservation Services to lead a conservation program for books, manuscripts, maps, photographs and other special collections.

Based at the Stanford Redwood City campus, you will direct daily operations, supervise two book conservators, one paper conservator and two technicians, and oversee treatments, housing and exhibition loans to local, national and international venues.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or advanced conservation credential with strong academic library focus.
• Five+ years in a conservation lab for a research library or cultural heritage institution.
• MLIS or MLS from an ALA-accredited program.
• Extensive knowledge of conservation theory and practice.

Responsibilities

• Manage the daily operations of Conservation Services; supervise staff; coordinate conservation workflows; ensure quality and timeliness of conservation treatments; oversee health and safety practices.
• Lead Conservation Services staff including hiring, training, coaching and fostering an inclusive work environment.
• Oversee conservation treatment projects, coordination with external conservation vendors, and support for exhibit loans to venues.
• Develop and implement new Conservation Services workflows, policies, and procedures.
• Collaborate with Preservation Department management and stakeholders to meet strategic priorities.
• Represent Stanford Libraries in regional, national, and international professional activities.
