Job summary

Redford Township seeks a full-time Chief Mechanic (Mechanic V) in the Central Maintenance Department. The role performs a variety of maintenance and repair services on motorized vehicles and other equipment, testing during and after repairs, and supporting township services.

Requires a high school diploma/GED, five years' mechanic experience, Michigan mechanic certifications and MI CDL with air brake endorsement; Master certifications may substitute.

  • Michigan mechanic certification in engine repair, brakes, and another area required.

# Chief Mechanic (Mechanic V)LEO SNAGE BLDGFull-TimeRedford Township has an opening for a Full-Time Chief Mechanic (Mechanic V) within the Central Maintenance Department. The individual in this position performs a variety of general maintenance and repair services to motorized vehicles and other equipment.**Rate of Pay:** $29.14 - $36.00**FSLA:** Non Exempt/Full Time**Reports To:** Department Director or Designee**Benefits:**Partial paid benefits including health insurance, **defined benefit pension, paid vacation, paid sick leave and** **14 paid holidays.****Purpose:**Performs a variety of general maintenance and repair services to motorized vehicles, and other equipment. Operates vehicles and equipment to identify problems, test during and after repairs and as back up to and in support of other Redford Township services.**Essential Functions:**Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to the following duties, responsibilities, tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of Duties and Responsibilities is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not intended to be considered a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.**Example Duties/Responsibilities:**Supervises subordinate classified employees in the department and participates in the inspection and repairs of vehicles and other equipment; schedules and performs preventative maintenance according to manufacturer's or Redford Township maintenance schedules; identifies tools, equipment and parts needed to make repairs; maintains records of repairs made; provides input to supervisor on inventory and/or tool needs; responds to emergency and/or unexpected mechanical breakdowns.Operates vehicles and equipment within scope of knowledge, training and ability to test during and following repairs; serves as back-up operator; as required and approved by supervisor, assigns, trains and reviews work of subordinate staff; as required and approved by supervisor; performs other duties as assigned or required.**Minimum Qualifications:*** High school diploma/GED. Five years of experience as a mechanic working with motorized vehicles and other equipment.* A State of Michigan Mechanic's certification in engine repair, brakes and at least one other area is required. (Original documents must be presented at time of application.)* Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan commercial driver's license with five or fewer points; and required medical certificate. Such license shall have a group A or B designation and air brake endorsement.* Note: Possessing and maintaining Automotive Service Excellence Master Technician Status for automobiles or medium/heavy duty trucks may be substituted for state certification.**Additional Information/Requirements:*** Within six months of appointment obtain state certification as a Master Automobile Mechanic and within nine months obtain state certification as a Master Heavy-Duty Truck Mechanic.* Must be able to lift and carry heavy, bulky tools, equipment and other items weighing in excess of 50 pounds.* May be exposed to hazardous chemicals.* May be required to work in tight spaces.* May be required to work in all weather conditions.* Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the operation and use of motorized vehicles and other equipment.**Knowledge/Skills:*** Familiarity with the principles and techniques of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair;* Familiarity with the application and use of a variety of hand and other tools used to maintain and repair vehicles and equipment;* Familiarity with the content and focus of a variety of maintenance and repair manuals;* Familiarity with the principles of record keeping and file maintenance**THE CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF REDFORD IS AN EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER**List a Brief Description of Job Duties is required.Please list all employers within the past 10 years, in order from newest to oldest.
