Redford Township has an opening for Full-Time Mechanical Inspector within the Building and SafetyDepartment. The individual in this position will conduct mechanical and propertyinspections to ensure that commercial, residental and industrial heating, ventiliating, air conditioning, refrigeration and fire supressionequipment and their systems are in compliance with established codes, laws, and local ordinances.

Rate of Pay: $30.79 - $38.04 FSLA: Non Exempt/Full Time Reports To: Department Director or Designee Benefits: Partial paid benefits including health insurance, defined benefit pension, paid vacation, paid sick leave and 14 paid holidays.

Purpose: Conduct mechanical and property inspections to ensure that commercial, residential and industrial heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and fire suppression equipment and their systems are in compliance with established codes, laws, and local ordinances. Conducts residential and commercial plan reviews to ensure compliance with all applicable standards.

Example Duties/Responsibilities

• Conducts mechanical, and ordinance inspections
• coordinates and inspects sidewalk and rental programs
• works with complainants, homeowners, and contractors to resolve issues
• prepares reports regarding mechanical inspections, complaints, and violations
• issues summonses and complaints as authorized
• issues written notices of code violations requiring corrective action
• t estifies in court providing information and documentation regarding alleged violations
• provides comprehensive plan review for commercial and residential projects
• i nspects, through the use of visual observation and mechanical testing equipment, installations and alterations to commercial, residential and industrial heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and fire suppression equipment (HVAC) and their systems in order to assure compliance with state mechanical and energy codes
• d etermines compliance with applicable federal, state, county and local laws and codes
• meets with engineers, designers, contractors, and homeowners to explain comments generated from the plan review process
• e xamines and approves plans and specifications for proposed heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and fire suppression equipment installations and alterations
• r eviews proposed construction plans and documents to determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and codes
• inspects approved plans, specifications and permits issued for proposed work projects
• a pproves or denies mechanical permit applications.

Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED. Must be able to qualify and remain qualified under the rules promulgated by Michigan Act 54 of 1986. Mechanical Inspector – An applicant for registration as a provisional mechanical inspector shall have possessed a mechanical license for not less than 1 year in 3 or more categories 1, 2, 4, or 9 as defined in 1984 PA 192, MCL 338.971 to MCL 338.988 and known as the Forbes mechanical contractors act. Possess and maintain a valid driver license with five or fewer points.

Working Conditions

May be exposed to potentially dangerous situations and circumstances while inspecting industrial areas, construction sites or conducting fire damage investigations. Work is performed in houses or buildings under construction, undergoing alterations or being condemned. Some jobs require an employee to be exposed to heat, cold, noise, noxious fumes, dust, dirt, odor and dampness. Some jobs require an employee to work in a hazardous environment that involves exposure to unpleasant and noxious fumes and odors. Some jobs require an employee to be exposed to inclement weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

The job duties require an employee to walk, bend and reach for extended periods. The job duties require an employee to bend and stoop in confined spaces.

Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications

Upon appointment, individuals must meet the requirements of Act 54 of 1986 and become registered as a mechanical code inspector and plan reviewer. Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license.
