Job summary

The City of Somerville is seeking a Superintendent of Grounds to lead the Grounds Division in maintaining over 60 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces, including trees and athletic facilities. You will manage foremen, crews, and vendors, plan maintenance programs, and ensure safe, high-quality outdoor spaces citywide.

This role requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and 5–7 years’ supervisory experience, strong knowledge of park operations, IPM, budgeting, and contract administration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Business Administration, Parks and Recreation Management, Turfgrass Science and Management or related field; 5–7 years managing crews or laborers.
• Candidate should have knowledge of park management, playground safety, irrigation, tree/lawn care, and asset maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Grounds Division staff including foremen, tree care pros, operators, mechanics and laborers.
• Plan, organize, and direct maintenance for 60+ parks, playgrounds, and open spaces.
• Oversee contracts for landscaping, irrigation, play structures, and fields.
• Manage urban forest health initiatives and preventative maintenance.
• Coordinate with other city departments and vendors; ensure safety and compliance.
