Job description

The Goodwin Group is conducting an executive search for a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on behalf of a well-established, employee-owned consulting firm in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry located in Denver, Colorado. This firm operates nationally and provides integrated services across commercial real estate, infrastructure, and facilities.

The CFO will be a crucial member of the executive leadership team and will serve as a strategic partner to the CEO. This individual will lead the organization’s financial operations, planning, and compliance efforts while guiding long-term strategic growth and fostering a culture of accountability and performance. Our client’s integrated consulting services primarily focus on equity investors, owner-occupiers, and public facilities within the commercial real estate sector. Success in this role will require demonstrated leadership in managing financial operations, especially within an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) framework, in firms of similar scale and complexity.

The Successful Candidate Will:

  • Adopt a strategic mindset using financial insights and scenario planning for long-term direction.
  • Empower leaders to make informed decisions that support sustainable growth.
  • Prioritize team and company goals over personal interests for organizational success.
  • Take initiative to overcome challenges and enhance team performance.
  • Navigate negotiations with confidence and build strong relationships.
  • Balance direct communication with professionalism to build stakeholder trust.
  • Use best practices and data-driven insights to build strong cross-functional relationships that contribute to informed decision-making.
  • Stay updated on industry trends to position the company for success.
  • Oversee ESOP compliance and support a culture of employee ownership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead ESOP compliance, strategy, and audits, ensuring alignment with employee-ownership objectives while maximizing financial health.
  • Manage capital allocation and cultivate relationships with financial institutions to optimize the capital structure when needed and meet the firm’s evolving needs.
  • Provide financial oversight for the firm's five P&Ls, ensuring each is aligned with the company’s financial objectives and performance metrics.
  • Partner with CEO to oversee legal contracts, risk management, and insurance processes.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team to foster a high-performance culture with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a key member of the executive team to participate in strategic planning, governance, and other areas to drive company performance.
  • Present financial insights, forecasts, and analysis to the Board of Directors, ESOP trustees, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Drive a high-performance culture across the organization through internal partnerships and cross-functional decisions.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in financial leadership roles, including at least 5 years as a CFO or equivalent.
  • Background in AEC, consulting, or professional services environments preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead financial operations across multiple business units or P&Ls.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial planning and analysis, risk management, and compliance.
  • Experience with ESOPs or employee ownership models is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Proficiency in enterprise financial systems; familiarity with AEC360 or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to diverse audiences.
