Job summary

Boston Towing & Transportation seeks a licensed Chief Engineer with a USCG DDE Unlimited endorsement for a full-time role aboard a Boston-based towing vessel.

Position features a short-hitch, equal-time rotation (1 week on / 1 week off) with a focus on harbor operations. Union position with overtime, vacation, and health/retirement benefits. Local mariners enjoy a predictable schedule with work centered in Boston Harbor.

Qualifications

  • USCG DDE Unlimited endorsement required.
  • Valid MMC and medical certificate.
  • Tugboat or similar commercial marine engineering experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee engine room and vessel engineering spaces, ensuring safety and reliability.
  • Operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain main propulsion and auxiliary systems.
  • Maintain logs and maintenance records per company, USCG and ABS requirements.
  • Identify deficiencies and coordinate repairs with master and shoreside teams.
  • Hold designated PIC duties for fuel transfers and bunkering operations.
  • Perform fueling, lubrication, water loading, and vessel servicing per procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling of bilge water, sewage and waste in compliance with regs.
  • Execute preventative and corrective maintenance as directed.
