Job description

Primary Duties Include:
  • Operate and monitor propulsion systems, including Cummins and Caterpillar main engines (approximately 1,500 horsepower each).
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, generators, hydraulic systems and auxiliary machinery.
  • Inspect and maintain propulsion components – cooling systems, fuel injectors, turbochargers and exhaust systems.
  • Monitor engine performance through gauges, alarms and diagnostic tools; record operational data in engine room logs.
  • Conduct oil, fuel and coolant checks.
  • Oversee fuel transfers (bunkering) and ensure compliance with pollution prevention and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain auxiliary equipment such as generators, air compressors, bilge pumps and steering systems.
  • Ensure environmental compliance (MARPOL, oil record books, waste disposal procedures).
  • Coordinate with captain and deck officers on power availability, propulsion performance, and maintenance scheduling.
  • Keep the engine room clean, organized and ready for inspection at all times.
  • Maintain engineering logs for vessel.
