Job Summary

The Chief Engineer directs all aspects of engineering operations including emergency programs, energy management, asset protection, preventive maintenance, and repairs to equipment, structures, and grounds. They oversee the Engineering staff, accounting/budgeting, asset protection, inventory control, and human resources. The Chief Engineer aligns all operations with the General Manager's direction, company standards, and relevant regulations. Responsibilities include ensuring quality service, meeting financial goals, planning, and managing budgets and capital expenditures within approved plans.

Business Results

Utilizes broad business knowledge to develop strategies and lead the organization to achieve them, balancing short- and long-term perspectives.

  1. Direct all engineering functions, stay updated on brand standards and competitors to enhance revenues and profits while maintaining quality.
  2. Provide leadership using industry knowledge and experience, supporting the General Manager in positioning the hotel as a market leader.
  3. Act as a coach with a positive attitude, ensuring compliance with company policies and practices.
  4. Ensure adherence to brand standards and all applicable regulations.
  5. Maintain high-quality service and hospitality for guests.
  6. Conduct daily property walks to identify issues and engage with staff.
  7. Implement preventative maintenance programs to protect assets and address maintenance issues promptly.
  8. Inspect and evaluate the condition of engineering areas, equipment, and inventories.
  9. Investigate and report incidents and accidents.
  10. Coordinate with law enforcement, fire services, and insurance agencies to ensure safety and resolve issues.
  11. Generate cost comparisons and solicit bids/proposals as needed.
  12. Recommend improvements to the General Manager.
  13. Collaborate with the Corporate Office to track assets accurately.
  14. Oversee emergency programs, including staff training, drills, recordkeeping, and compliance.
  15. Promote accident prevention and ensure safety procedures are followed and staff are trained.
  16. Notify the General Manager of potential liabilities and recommend safeguards.
  17. Ensure staff are trained in asset maintenance and safety procedures.
  18. Communicate with department heads to address maintenance needs and respond promptly.
  19. Provide clear verbal and written instructions, supervise staff performance, and monitor costs and inventory.
  20. Conduct disciplinary actions and performance evaluations for engineering staff.
Guest Satisfaction

Ensure high customer satisfaction, build long-term relationships, and respond effectively to guest feedback and complaints. Lead by example in guest relations and focus on continuous improvement.

Lead the organization with strategic vision, accountability, conflict resolution, and adaptability to change.

  • Perform property inspections and address needed improvements.

Identify and develop talent proactively. Hire the best candidates, manage training, and ensure succession planning.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Experience

  • Minimum of five years in building management/engineering, with a successful track record in profitable engineering management.
  • Hospitality industry experience preferred.
  • At least three years of managerial experience, including decision-making, negotiations, and project management.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Effective scheduling, delegation, and management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
  • Strong mathematical skills for budgeting and complex calculations.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and perform essential functions for entire shift.
  • Work in various environmental conditions, perform physical tasks such as climbing, lifting up to 100 pounds, and using tools.
