Job summary

Habitat For Humanity Central Arizona is seeking a Chief Development Officer to set the strategic direction for all fundraising activities and lead the Development team. You will oversee planning, budgeting, and execution across individual, major, corporate, faith, foundation, and planned giving initiatives.

The CDO will manage a portfolio of high-capacity donors, collaborate with the CEO and board, and ensure alignment with Habitat’s mission while driving long-term sustainability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and 5+ years in senior development leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted donor relationships and lead a team.
  • Experience with major gifts, foundation fundraising, and events.

JOB SUMMARY:The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization’s full range of fundraising efforts and leading the Development team. The CDO will oversee the planning and implementation of all development activities in support of Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona (Habitat) and its core funding areas. The CDO serves as a member of the senior management team to further the goals and objectives of Habitat’s programs and services. Additionally, the CDO will work directly with individual, corporate, and civic supporters to secure the revenue needed for the long-term sustainability of Habitat.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to achieve annual contributed-revenue goals of $10million and forecasting a 3-5 year revenue strategy to support Habitat’s construction projects.Foster a culture of philanthropy by ensuring all fund development efforts align with Habitat’s vision, mission and values.Develop and execute short and long-term fundraising strategic plans, set goals and objectives, including a comprehensive annual development budget focused on individual, major, corporate, faith, foundation and planned giving goals.Exercises strategic servant leadership over:Fundraising strategyRevenue forecastingDevelopment budgetDepartment staffingDonor pipeline strategyMajor gift strategyDevelopment technology/data strategyGift acceptance policiesDevelopment communications in partnership with marketingLong-term revenue diversificationEnsure that the development department thoroughly interacts and integrates with all departments to create a team environment to achieve organizational goals.Work cross-functionally with staff throughout Habitat to ensure alignment among program, volunteer, marketing, and development staff efforts.Manage and grow a portfolio of high-capacity individual and institutional donors to secure leadership gifts for HabitatLead a team of twelve development professionals. Assure team members are well-versed on the history, values, branding, key messages, programs, and services of Habitat and can accurately and professionally articulate the Habitat story.Lead strategic volunteer committees, such as Board Development Committee, Special Events Committee(s), Planned Giving Committee, and Faith Partner Committee.Establish and enforce all policies and procedures related to development efforts.Oversee the planning and execution of all revenue-generating special events and initiatives including our annual Blueprints and Blue Jeans event.Develop a board engagement and fundraising strategy and partner with the CEO and board chair to execute it.Assist the CEO in Board development, one-on-ones and attend all Nominating Committee meetings.Remain current on fundraising trends and practices and make strategy adjustments, as necessary.Manage department staff through effective supervision and performance evaluations, while providing mentioning, coaching and training.Provide ongoing evaluation of Habitat’s fundraising efforts, monitor progress towards annual revenue goals, and report to the development team, the senior management team, and the Board of Directors regularly.Serve as a spokesperson for the organization at build ceremonies, Saturday Build days, fundraising events, and PR opportunities.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with donors, volunteers, board members, community leaders, and internal stakeholders Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak, read and write English.Excellent organizational skills.Positive personality and attitude.EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree in Non-Profit Management, Business Administration, Marketing. Communications, or related field.More than five years of experience in senior development leadership and supervising employees in a non-profit organization.10+ years of progressive fundraising experience.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB:Hear and speak to use telephone and communicate with people both in and out of the office.Sit at desk for extended periods, as well as move around office area frequently throughout the day.Manual dexterity for computer operation and office equipment uses.Flexible work hours requiring willingness to attend evening and weekend events.Ability to walk around active job sites and meet volunteers and sponsors where they are in the field.Reliable transportation for visiting off-site locations.Willingness for some travel including overnight stays.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS:Many of duties of this position are performed in an office setting, performing detailed work sitting at a desk and working on the computer.Requirement to meet sponsors and donors for any meals throughout the week, early and late.There may be periods of being on an undeveloped or construction site which may be of uneven terrain with exposure to dirt, dust, dampness, construction debris, extreme temperatures, construction noises, fumes, and odors from construction materials. Wearing a hard at and work shoes may be required.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:Employee must be proficient in or able to use or learn to use office equipment such as computer, printer, phone, copiers, calculator, and other communication vehicles.Experience with development/philanthropy database programs is highly desired.
