Job summary

The College of Staten Island, part of The City University of New York, is hiring a College Laboratory Technician to prepare and manage undergraduate and graduate chemistry labs. You will label solutions, manage glassware, and maintain safety and chemical storage inventories.

Responsibilities include assisting students, ordering supplies, and ensuring lab readiness for 100- and 200-level courses, with emphasis on organic chemistry labs. A HS diploma with related experience is required; B.Sc.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma with four years of related experience.
• Associate degree may substitute for two years experience; a Bachelor's degree may substitute for four years experience.
• A B.Sc. or higher degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry is preferred; however, qualified applicants in other related disciplines are encouraged to apply.
• At least one year of experience in the safe handling and preparation of chemicals and chemical reagents, including organic chemicals and related reagents.
• Working knowledge of computer software applications, including spreadsheets, purchasing systems, and chemical inventory systems.

Responsibilities

• Preparing, dispensing, and labeling solutions, reagents, and glassware for undergraduate and graduate chemistry lab courses.
• Maintaining chemical storage inventories in physical and electronic formats.
• Ordering chemicals, supplies, and equipment through the purchasing system and tracking deliveries.
• Assisting with the condition, organization, and readiness of instructional labs and proper chemical waste handling.
• Ensuring compliance with safety regulations (OSHA, EPA) and supporting safety audits.
• Setting up and organizing student labs for 100- and 200-level courses, esp. organic chemistry labs.
• Performing routine maintenance, calibration, and minor repairs on lab equipment; managing inventories.
• Assisting faculty and students in using lab instruments and troubleshooting equipment.
