Job summary

West Virginia University is seeking an Academic Lab Manager II to organize, supervise and optimize day-to-day chemistry laboratory operations in the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry.

You will support faculty with experiment development, ensure safe handling of chemicals, and maintain laboratory readiness for teaching labs. The role involves overseeing prep facilities, managing inventory, coordinating supplies, and supervising student workers to uphold safety and efficiency in a vibrant

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related science field.
• Minimum of one year working in a laboratory setting.
• Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Prepares chemicals, solutions, and materials used in chemistry laboratories and by faculty for demonstrations; dispenses solutions and delivers chemicals and solutions before each lab session.
• Manages areas of the Chemistry Prep Facilities; maintains quality and consistency of laboratory chemicals for teaching labs.
• Ensures work areas are hazard- and obstruction-free; reevaluates storage locations, equipment and personnel to optimize spaces.
• Assists faculty with development and testing of new teaching lab experiments; suggests changes based on literature reviews.
• Pre-runs proposed experiments to determine efficacy and safety; estimates time needed for experiments by undergraduates.
• Maintains knowledge of safety practices in chemical handling and proper storage of solutions.
