Job summary

Actalent in Princeton, NJ is seeking a Chemical Process Engineer to support design, development, scale-up, and implementation of chemical processes from laboratory to commercial production.

You will prepare and review process deliverables (PFDs, P&IDs, mass and energy balances), size equipment, and apply safety standards under senior guidance, while collaborating with R&D, Operations, Quality, EH&S, and suppliers to enable reliable, efficient manufacturing and technology transfer.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering required; master’s degree preferred.
• Experience with chemical process development, scale-up, or manufacturing is expected.
• Knowledge of process engineering documentation (PFDs, P&IDs, Plant 3D models) is required.
• Experience with process calculations and data analytics for process improvement is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support design, development, scale-up, and implementation of chemical manufacturing processes from laboratory scale through pilot plant and commercial production.
• Assist with preparation and review of process engineering deliverables (PFDs, P&IDs, mass & energy balances, heat transfer, fluid flow, equipment sizing, utility estimates, control narratives).
• Support design and modification of facilities, skids, reaction systems, and related infrastructure.
• Apply engineering standards and regulatory requirements under the direction of senior engineers.
• Assist with safety considerations including pressure relief, venting, containment, and hazardous materials handling.
• Prepare and update equipment datasheets, specifications, scopes of work, and vendor requirements for capital projects.
• Support capital project execution (design reviews, vendor evaluations, factory acceptance tests, commissioning, startup, closeout).
• Develop experimental plans using DOE, hypothesis testing, sampling, and process validation approaches.
• Collect and analyze process data to identify trends, variations, and opportunities for improvement.
• Apply SPC and process-performance monitoring to improve yield, quality, and reliability.
• Analyze data with Excel, Minitab, JMP, Python, SQL, Tableau, or equivalent tools.
• Collaborate with R&D, Operations, Quality, EH&S, Maintenance, Automation, Supply Chain, and vendors for technology transfer.
• Assist with development of process automation and control requirements and instrumentation selection.
• Participate in risk assessments, design reviews, and startup safety reviews.
