Responsibilities

• Analyze product failure data and lab results to determine causes and develop solutions.
• Conduct tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure quality.
• Determine methods for fabricating and joining materials.
• Design and direct testing and/or control of processing procedures.
• Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors related to design objectives.
• Monitor material performance and evaluate deterioration.
• Plan and implement lab operations to develop procedures meeting cost and performance standards.
• Review new product plans and advise on manufacturability while meeting design goals.
• Potentially supervise a crew of hourly employees.
• Support other duties as assigned.

Location: Middletown, OH

Co-op term may be completed during either the Spring (January to May) or Summer (May to August) semester, with timing to be discussed during the interview process.

As a Chemical Engineering Co-Op at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location, but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.

Summary of Responsibilities:

• Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions
• Conduct tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure their quality
• Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials
• Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures
• Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials
• Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives
• Monitor material performance and evaluate material deterioration
• Plan and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards
• Review new product plans and make recommendations for ease of manufacturability while meeting the product design objectives, such as strength, weight, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost
• Potentially supervise a crew of hourly employees
• Various other duties as assigned to support the business

Minimum Qualifications:

• Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in Chemical Engineering or other related technical degrees
• Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2027
