Job summary

IQE is seeking a Characterization Engineer – P2 to join our advanced semiconductor materials team in Taunton, MA. The role blends cleanroom work with office duties, requiring deep experience in characterization, metrology, and device processing equipment, with a strong emphasis on traceability and quality records.

You will collaborate across functions, follow SOPs and EHS protocols, and contribute to continuous improvement, with opportunities for professional development and a competitive

Qualifications

  • Advanced experience in Characterization or equivalent manufacturing field.
  • 7+ years experience in Characterisation or equivalent combination of education, experience and/or knowledge.
  • Experience of working in Characterisation or Engineering functions.
  • Experience of working effectively in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Split work between cleanroom and office following required protocols.
  • Maintain high cleanliness with scheduled housekeeping tasks.
  • Comply with SOPs, policies, and record-keeping.
  • Conform to EHS, health, safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Use tools to record work for traceability and process control.
  • Support corrective/preventive actions and root-cause investigations.

About the role

The Characterization Engineer:

  • Split work between the cleanroom environment, following all required protocols and procedures and the office.
  • Support a high level of cleanliness by completing scheduled housekeeping tasks.
  • Comply with all company policies, SOP (Standard Operating Procedures), Work Instructions, and record keeping requirements.
  • Comply with all EHS protocols and requirements.
  • Comply with all health and safety, HR, environmental quality and cybersecurity guidelines and procedures internally and within the scope of business, ISO, and regulatory requirements as it pertains to the job function.
  • Have clear understanding of chemicals and substances in the workplace and follow strict guidance for handling of such substances, which could include PPE requirements.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment and promote teamwork across departments.
  • The role may require a degree of flexibility in working hours, which will be discussed and agreed to support both individual and organisational needs.
  • Adhere to the competency management process, completing assigned tasks, training and approvals in a timely manner.
  • Use computerized tools and software to follow process and routine tasks, accurately recording all works carried out for traceability and within the scope of the role.
  • Be accountable for ongoing objectives.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Have intermediate level of experience and competence with troubleshooting.
  • Liaise with other site functions to ensure daily targets are met.
  • Have good competence and experience with the following:
  • In-Line Metrology (ILM) tools with an understanding of application and operation.
  • Destructive metrology tools with an understanding of application and operation.
  • Device processing equipment with an understanding of application and operation.
  • Chemical etching.
  • Electrical and optical testing procedures of fabricated devices independently, following training.
  • Have good competence and experience of relevant computer software systems to follow and process routine tasks accurately, recording all works carried out for traceability.
  • Have a good understanding of scheduled routine calibration and monitoring tasks.
  • Support corrective/preventive actions, problem solving, failure analysis, process qualification, and root cause investigations for areas of responsibility.
  • Assists in defining the scheduled routine calibration and monitoring, performing regular daily, weekly and monthly tasks.
  • Perform other functions and duties as required.
