Job summary

University Hospital is seeking a Certified Tumor Registrar to join our medical records team in San Antonio. The CTR will identify and abstract cancer data, ensuring accurate coding and compliance with state and national registries.

You will collaborate with Cancer Committee, attend Tumor Board meetings, and support regulatory reporting efforts. The ideal candidate has CTR certification, at least three years of CTR experience, and proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Qualifications

• Certification as CTR or equivalent coursework required.
• Three years of CTR experience required; CTR certification within 12 months of hire.
• Experience in Medical Record Administration and ICD-9-CM coding.

Responsibilities

• Reviews hospital records to identify and compile patient data for cancer management and regulatory compliance.
• Abstracts and codes information into the cancer registry software system.
• Attends Cancer Committee and Tumor Board Meetings.
• Submits Cancer Registry Data to the Commission on Cancer and Texas Cancer Registry.
• Validates data within medical records and with the registry vendor quarterly.
• Maintains up-to-date reporting to registries, including concurrent data reporting.
• Participates in Commission on Cancer surveys and related regulatory meetings.

POSITION SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reviews hospital records to identify and compile patient data for use in cancer management program and to comply with government regulations.
• Reviews patient's medical record, abstracts, and codes information (i.e. demographics, history/extent of disease, diagnostic procedures/treatment) into software system.
• Attends Cancer Committee and Tumor Board Meetings
• Submits Cancer Registry Data to the Commission on Cancer and Texas Cancer Registry
• Validates data within medical record and within Cancer Registry Vendor on a quarterly basis.
• Stays up to date with all reporting to Registries including concurrent data reporting requirements.
• Attends Commission on Cancer Surveys and all regulatory meetings which include Cancer Registry or Data Analysis.
• Must be able to comprehend and use various hospital computer software and other data base programs; displays knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) or equivalent coursework in an approved college level curriculum in a recognized allied health field as determined by NCRA's Council on Certification is required.
• Three years of experience working as a CTR is required. If not a current CTR, CTR eligibility is required. Must obtain the CTR certification within twelve (12) months from date of hire.
• Experience in Medical Record Administration is required.
• Knowledge and use of ICD-9-CM coding principals is required; ICD-O principals preferred.
