Job summary

UT Health San Antonio is seeking a Cancer Center Tumor Registry Analyst to identify, register, and maintain the tumor registry database. The role requires abstracting 4-5 cases daily and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities include reviewing EMRs, correcting Texas Cancer Registry data, and providing data for physicians and research. Relevant certifications and accurate data handling are essential.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in health science or related field is required.
• Four (4) years of registry/case abstracting experience is required.
• Certified Oncology Data Specialist certification is required.
• RHIT certification preferred.

• Reviews electronic medical records to identify and collect patient data for cancer and other reportable diagnoses.
• Review case finding list for reportable cases, corrects cases returned by the Texas Cancer Registry and updates existing cases in the registry.
• Abstracts patient information into the cancer management program in compliance with government regulations for physicians and research studies (expected 4-5 cases per day).
• Upholds legal and ethical standards: release of cancer registry data, confidentiality, data transmission, and adherence to the NCRA Code of Ethics.
• Attends training/seminars to maintain compliance with Texas reporting requirements.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under limited supervision, responsible for identifying, registering and maintaining the Cancer Center Tumor Registry database.

Responsibilities

• Reviews electronic medical records to identify and collect patient data for patients treated for cancer and other reportable diagnosis.
• Review case finding list for reportable cases, corrects cases returned by the Texas Cancer Registry and updates existing cases in the registry.
• Abstracts patient information into the cancer management program in compliance with government regulations and provides information for physicians and research studies. Expected to abstract 4 - 5 cases per day at hire.
• Responsible for upholding legal and ethical aspects to include: release of cancer registry data, confidentiality, data transmission, and adherence to the NCRA Code of Ethics.
• Attends training and seminars as needed to maintain compliance with the State of Texas Department of Health reporting requirements.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Experience in tumor registry or medical records experience.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology and tumor nomenclature.
• Effective skills in abstracting and coding patient medical record information.
• Effective interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work in an effective and efficient manner.
• Ability to be detail-oriented as required in the examination of clinical and numerical data.
• Proficient knowledge of all Microsoft applications.
• Ability to remain up-to-date with regard to educational and/or technical qualifications related to, knowledge of the cancer disease process, cancer diagnostic methods and procedures, composition of the patient record, data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills.

EDUCATION:

Associates degree in health science field or post high school coursework in nursing, health information management, or related field is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Four (4) years of registry/case abstracting experience is required.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Certified Oncology Data Specialist certification is required.

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is preferred.
