Position Overview

The Surgical Technologist II (operating room scrub technician) sets up sterile fields, gathers supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used. This role passes instruments to surgeons during surgery and performs count procedures per policy during surgical cases.

The Surgical Technologist II serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists, takes call for routine and high-acuity cases after the orientation period, and learns, performs, and completes assigned responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements for Hire
  • Registered by the State Board of Medicine
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST) certification
Certification or Registration for Continued Employment
  • Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine
  • Current AHA BLS HCP Certification
  • Current CST, TS-C, or CORST
Experience
  • Required: Minimum of 6 months as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub tech position
  • Preferred: 2 years of experience in a similar role
Education/Training
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, military training, or Licensed Practical Nursing Program
  • Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program
Independent Actions

Functions under RN or independent practitioner supervision, providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem solving in accordance with hospital policies. Requires prior approval for schedule changes, legal issues, or deviations from standard care.

Additional Position Requirements
  • Surgical Technologists work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established with the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
  • Takes independent call after orientation for routine or high-acuity cases.
  • Physical activities include lifting 50-100 lbs, prolonged standing/sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching, and exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Requires mental skills such as recall, reasoning, problem solving, and communication, and emotional resilience to handle a fast-paced environment.
