Job Summary and Qualifications

Assists surgeons, anesthetists, and registered nurses in perioperative care. Under RN supervision, acts as the primary scrub person handling instruments, equipment, and supplies during procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Secures supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures based on patient needs.
2. Prepares the cardiac operating room using sterile technique.
3. Demonstrates knowledge of surgeons’ preferences and anticipates needs.
4. Follows steps for scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
5. Performs needle, sponge, and instrument counts with the RN.
6. Creates and maintains a neat, organized sterile field.
7. Ensures all equipment functions properly before use.
8. Demonstrates knowledge of supplies, instrumentation, equipment, and sutures required for each patient.
9. Checks medications on the sterile field with the RN and transfers them to the surgeon.
10. Assists with draping the sterile field.
11. Uses resources cost-effectively and follows manufacturer’s recommendations for devices.
12. Prepares instruments for terminal cleaning.
13. Assists with patient transfer from the operating room table.
14. Participates in inventory management and staff meetings.
15. Supports Quality Management initiatives.
16. Adheres to attendance, safety, organizational, and ethical standards.
17. Promotes patient dignity and provides a calm, supportive environment.
18. Recommends policy revisions and participates in emergency response activities.
19. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an approved Surgical Technologist program.
• Previous OR experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Surgical Technologist certification preferred.
