Job Summary and Qualifications
Assist surgeons, anesthetists, and registered nurses in the delivery of perioperative care to patients. Under the direction of the registered nurse, acts as a primary scrub person handling surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies necessary during a procedure.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Secure supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures based on patient needs.
- Assist with preparation of the cardiac operating room using sterile technique.
- Demonstrate knowledge of surgeons’ preferences and anticipate their needs.
- Follow steps for scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
- Perform needle, sponge, and instrument counts with the registered nurse.
- Create and maintain a neat, organized sterile field.
- Ensure all equipment is functioning properly before use.
- Demonstrate knowledge of supplies, instrumentation, equipment, and suture material required for individual patients.
- Follow proper technique for checking medications on the sterile field with the registered nurse and transferring the medication to the surgeon for administration during the procedure.
- Assist the surgeon with draping of the sterile field.
- Use all devices according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Prepare instruments for terminal cleaning.
- Assist with patient transfer from the operating room table.
- Participate in maintaining department inventory of supplies.
- Participate constructively in staff meetings and support Quality Management initiatives.
- Conform to organizational attendance requirements.
- Utilize self-evaluation processes for professional growth.
- Identify personal needs and increase skills and knowledge accordingly.
- Attend mandatory in-services.
- Participate in department projects/committees.
- Accept constructive feedback and take appropriate actions to improve.
- Report concerns through proper channels responsibly.
- Demonstrate behaviors that promote communication and collaboration.
- Function as a preceptor for new staff or students as needed.
- Minimize turnover between cases through active participation.
- Perform duties that meet department goals.
- Monitor the care provided by students and ancillary staff.
- Adhere to safety, organizational, and ethical standards.
- Promote patient dignity during care.
- Provide a calm, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients.
- Recommend revisions or new policies and procedures.
- Exercise care in the use and operation of equipment and reference materials, perform routine maintenance, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Participate in emergency activities like disaster drills and fire safety.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
- Graduate from an approved Surgical Technologist program.
Experience:
- Previous OR surgical experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Surgical Technologist certification preferred.
