Job summary

Lifepoint Health is seeking a Surgical Technologist specializing in robotic and bariatric surgery to join our operating room team in Hickory, NC. The role requires preparing sterile fields, handling instruments, and assisting during complex procedures to ensure patient safety and efficient OR turnover.

You will support da Vinci robotic systems and bariatric programs, maintain instrument inventory, and participate in quality improvement initiatives while adhering to HIPAA and infection control

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification for Surgical Technology (NBSTSA) is required.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • Ability to scrub and assist in robotic and bariatric surgeries.
  • Commitment to infection prevention and HIPAA compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain sterile fields for a wide variety of procedures.
  • Scrub and assist surgeons by passing instruments and supplies.
  • Anticipate needs and ensure instruments are readily available.
  • Handle surgical specimens per policies and procedures.
  • Perform counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments per standards.
  • Assist with setup, operation, troubleshooting, and turnover of robotic system.
  • Maintain bariatric instrumentation and support bariatric procedures.
  • Inspect instruments and ensure cleaning and sterilization processes are followed.
  • Participate in quality and safety initiatives and staff training.

Job description

The Surgical Technologist specializing in Robotic and Bariatric Surgery is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile environment, and providing technical support during surgical procedures. This role requires advanced proficiency in da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery, comprehensive knowledge of bariatric surgical procedures, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Surgical Procedure Support

  • Prepare and maintain sterile fields for a wide variety of surgical procedures.
  • Scrub and assist surgeons by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment during operative procedures.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure instruments and supplies are readily available.
  • Handle surgical specimens according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform sponge, sharp, and instrument counts in accordance with organizational standards.

Robotic Surgery Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in setup, operation, troubleshooting, and turnover of the da Vinci Surgical System.
  • Prepare robotic instruments, accessories, drapes, and equipment prior to procedures.
  • Assist with robotic docking and undocking procedures.
  • Maintain competency in robotic instrumentation, camera systems, and equipment management.
  • Support surgeon and staff training related to robotic procedures as requested.
  • Participate in robotic equipment maintenance, inventory management, and quality improvement initiatives.

Bariatric Surgery Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of bariatric surgical procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, revision procedures, and related advanced laparoscopic techniques.
  • Ensure availability and readiness of specialty bariatric instrumentation and equipment.
  • Understand bariatric patient safety considerations, positioning requirements, and specialized equipment needs.
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with MBSAQIP standards and bariatric program requirements, where applicable.

Equipment and Instrument Management

  • Inspect instruments and equipment for functionality prior to procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization processes are followed.
  • Collaborate with Sterile Processing and Materials Management to maintain instrument inventory and specialty equipment needs.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and communicate concerns to leadership promptly.

Quality and Safety

  • Adhere to AORN guidelines, infection prevention standards, and departmental policies.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new surgical technologists and students.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Licenses:

  • Certification for Surgical Technology with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • Competent in at least 3 specialty areas.
