Job summary

Carilion Clinic in Christiansburg, VA is seeking a Certified Surgical First Assistant to support the surgical team in the OR. The CSA will assist the surgeon, maintain sterile fields, and perform instrument passing, wound closure, and local anesthesia administration, while ensuring patient confidentiality and high-quality care.

Responsibilities include planning and evaluating patient care, performing counts, handling instruments, and accessing radiographic images in the EMR.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Assistant program.
• Experience gained through hands-on training; veterans may be grandfathered in VA.
• Certification: Certified Surgical Assistant with VA Board of Medicine.

Responsibilities

• Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum outcomes.
• Establishes and maintains sterile field and ensures team adherence.
• Performs/ passes instruments safely and assists surgeon in OR.
• Performs/ administers local anesthetics.
• Maintains Foley(s) and drains; applies dressings/casts as needed.
• Documents and participates in surgical counts per policy.
• Accesses radiographic images in the EMR and collaborates with the team.
• Delivers compassionate patient care and supports a team-based approach.
