Job summary

State of South Carolina seeks an Orientation and Mobility specialist to collaborate with school and agency staff to schedule visits and deliver therapy designed to increase independent functioning for students who are blind or visually impaired.

You will assess progress, adjust plans, consult with families and professionals, and develop individualized educational treatment plans based on assessments. Experience with infants and toddlers in natural environments is included.

Qualifications

• Develop and implement O&M therapy to increase independence in students who are blind or visually impaired.
• Collaborate with parents, medical staff, teachers, and professionals to meet student needs.
• Consult with administrators and facilities staff to recommend campus designs promoting independence.
• Evaluate orientation and mobility skills and related vision-specific needs.
• Assess progress and modify instructional programs accordingly.
• Develop individualized educational plans for O&M instruction based on assessments.

Job description

Collaborate with the school/agency staff to schedule visits and provide O&M therapy designed to increase specific skills. Consults with parents, medical staff, teachers, and other professionals regarding the needs of students. Consults with administrators, grounds and facilities staff to make recommendations regarding the most appropriate campus design to promote independence for students who are blind. Evaluate the orientation and mobility skills and related vision-specific needs of identified students. Needs may include the areas of sensory, cognitive, social, motor, and/or selfhelp ADL skills. Assess the progress of each student and modify the therapeutic or instructional program as needed. Develop appropriate individualized educational treatment plans for O&M instruction based on assessments that are designed to increase indepenendent functioning of students in a variety of settings. Provide O&M instruction and consultation to families of infants and toddlers who are blind in the natural environment.

Bachelor's degree in Orientation and Mobility with current ACVREP certification in Orientation and Mobility and experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired.
