Orientation and Mobility is part of the educational process that prepares individualswith visual impairments to travel independently and safely in different environments. Assist in ensuringthat all Orientation and Mobility instruction meets or exceeds contract obligations and professionalstandards. Lead efforts to identify and effectively implement improvements to the organization’s abilityto provide effective O&M services.

Principal Responsibilities:
  • Actively support Lighthouse Central Florida’s mission, vision, and core values in daily interactions with clients, staff, and all external and internalconstituencies.
  • Actively participate in agency and team meetings to ensure effectivecommunication, service quality, and teamwork.
Direct Service:
  • Provide instruction relevant to the needs of each client in individual or group training eithercenter-based or in the community.
  • Ensure program quality which could mean offering sessions outside of typicalbusiness hours and staff/student ratios are met by attending Children’sProgram and Transition events, including some weekends and SummerProgramming (Ability to work a flexible schedule as necessary).
  • Conduct Orientation and Mobility evaluations, Comprehensive FunctionalAssessments, and other types of assessments (based on the client’s age) asrequired. Complete full and accurate documentation of each and developindividualized service plan.
  • Develop and review Individualized Training Plans for clients.
  • Evaluate new and emerging techniques for Orientation and Mobility.
  • Promote independence through Orientation and Mobility through problem-solving, suggesting adaptations, and client observation.
  • Navigate the agency’s database to maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation and reports.
Community Education:
  • Participate in community education and public awareness activities to develop collaboration with community partners to ensure that vision rehabilitation services are recognized as an important resource to the community and known to individuals who can benefit from services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Visual Disabilities or Special Education
License and/or Certification:

Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP) (COMS)certification, or eligibility for ACVREP certification required.

Experience:

Preferred minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching Orientation and Mobility

Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills:
  • Possess excellent skills in the techniques of Orientation and Mobility.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of orientation and mobility principles and techniques, demonstrate skills in teaching Orientation and Mobility.
  • Ability to effectively convey O&M skills to a wide variety of clients, adapting teaching methods as needed to accommodate a variety of learning styles.
  • Possess a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook and internet.
  • Ability to project a positive, compassionate image to clients, co-workers and the public.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to move about independently within the facility and in the community we serve.
  • Moderate ability to move and lift items usually ranging up to 40 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing upon occasion.
  • Prolonged sitting at work station.
Requirements:
  • Pass Level II background checks
  • Possess or be able to utilize reliable transportation
  • Eligible to work in the United States
