Responsibilities

A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) plays a vital role in rehabilitating and caring for patients with diverse physical, mental, or emotional conditions. The main goal is to help individuals develop, recover, improve, and maintain skills necessary for daily living and working. Key responsibilities include:

  • Patient Care Execution: Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, implement therapeutic plans, teach patients to use adaptive equipment, guide exercises, and engage patients in activities essential for recovery.
  • Activity and Program Planning: Assist in planning and selecting therapeutic activities tailored to each patient's needs and interests, aligning with the goals set by the occupational therapist.
  • Progress Monitoring: Observe, document, and report patient progress, adjusting therapy interventions as needed to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Patient and Family Education: Educate patients and families about therapy processes, adaptive equipment, and home modifications to support ongoing recovery and independence.
Qualifications
  • Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program
  • Current license/certification in the state of practice
