Description
The job of Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) involves coordinating with the occupational therapist to prepare, implement, and perform occupational therapy interventions according to the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), under the supervision and direction of the Occupational Therapist. This role reports to the Occupational Therapist and the Coordinator of Therapeutic Services.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Implement students’ IEP objectives, record and collect data, and accurately document progress and needs related to goals, including writing progress reports.
- Maintain files and records (e.g., daily notes, attendance, Medicaid forms) in collaboration with the Occupational Therapist for documentation purposes.
- Provide direct occupational therapy services to students in accordance with service delivery and IEP goals to ensure compliance with established practices and procedures.
- Instruct, counsel, and supervise students in daily living skills, academics, self-advocacy, play/leisure, vocational training, fine motor, and visual perceptual skills as identified in IEP.
- Create meaningful, individualized, and functional treatment activities to meet student-specific goals.
- Communicate effectively and positively with professional staff and related individuals, participate in team meetings as appropriate, and follow the guidance of the OT.
- Support students in Community Inclusion activities such as recreation and education, aligned with student interests and IEP objectives.
- Adapt the school and classroom environment, tools, and materials under the supervision of the OT to enhance student functioning and access to curriculum and activities.
- Support sensory needs and functional life skill development programs (e.g., sensory programs, cooking groups) in collaboration with the Occupational Therapist.
- Provide training, consultation, and instruction to teachers and team members on the use of adaptive equipment and OT programming.
- Assist the Occupational Therapist with reevaluations and treatment plan development.
- Communicate student status changes to the Occupational Therapist and recommend modifications to the care plan as needed.
- Participate in monthly supervision meetings with the Occupational Therapist.
- Maintain all mandated staff education and training, including CPR/First Aid, Safety Care, and licensures as required by state and national standards.
Qualifications
Must be a Licensed Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in the state of Massachusetts.
