Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, including clerical and communication duties to support departmental efficiency. All duties are performed collaboratively, following standards outlined in competency-based evaluation tools. The CNA participates in delegated functions and commits to delivering quality service to patients, the public, and co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Assists patients with activities of daily living, including:

• Range of motion exercises
• Patient ambulation
• Positioning and skin care
• Distributing linen and changing beds
• Feeding and meal delivery assistance
• Routine hygiene care, toileting, and personal hygiene

Collects patient data and specimens:

• Urine, stool, sputum specimens
• Records vital signs, weights, and other assessments
• Communicates patient status and reports changes to licensed professionals

Performs and explains patient care procedures:

• Incentive spirometry
• Patient transportation and preparation for diagnostics
• Assists rehab therapists
• Oxygen therapy setup
• Room preparation and post-mortem care
• Admission and discharge procedures
• Emergency assistance
• Equipment maintenance and cleaning
• Suctioning and blood sugar testing
• IV removal as instructed
• EKGs (department-specific)

Additional responsibilities include:

• Answering and directing unit calls
• Data entry and documentation
• Patient registration activities
• Equipment and supply coordination
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED
• CNA license issued by the Commonwealth of VA
• AHA BLS CPR certification at hire
• For Snowden at Fredericksburg: CPI certification within 90 days of hire
