Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for providing direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. This includes performing clerical, communication, and other duties to support Department services. All duties are performed collaboratively with team members and according to competency standards. The CNA participates in delegated functions and demonstrates a commitment to quality service for patients, the public, and colleagues.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Assisting patients with daily activities:

  • Range of motion exercises
  • Ambulating patients
  • Positioning patients and skin care
  • Distributing linen and changing beds
  • Assisting with feeding and meals
  • Providing hygiene care, toileting, and personal hygiene

Data collection and specimen handling:

  • Obtaining and processing urine, stool, and sputum specimens
  • Recording health data, weights, vital signs, pulse oximetry, pain assessment, and intake/output
  • Reporting patient status and condition changes to licensed professionals

Performing and explaining patient care procedures:

  • Incentive spirometry
  • Transporting patients and preparing them for diagnostics
  • Assisting rehab therapists (PM & R)
  • Oxygen therapy setup and pulse oximetry
  • Room preparation and post-mortem care
  • Preparing for admission and discharge
  • Assisting in emergency situations
  • Equipment maintenance and cleaning
  • Oral and nasopharyngeal suctioning
  • Blood sugar testing
  • IV catheter removal (per nurse instruction)
  • Performing EKGs (department-specific)

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Answering and directing unit calls
  • Data entry into electronic medical records
  • Patient registration activities
  • Coordinating equipment and supplies, reporting malfunctions
  • Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • CNA license issued by the Commonwealth of VA required
  • AHA BLS CPR certification required at hire
  • For Snowden at Fredericksburg: CPI certification required within 90 days of hire
