Occ Summary
The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. Responsibilities include greeting patients, answering telephones, scheduling appointments, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, and assisting the physician during examinations and procedures. The CMA also authorizes drug refills as directed and performs other clinical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician.
Clinical Responsibilities:
The CMA takes medical histories and records vital signs, explains treatment procedures to patients, and arranges for hospital admissions and referrals. Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required. Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering treatments to patients is essential.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Good customer service skills are necessary, along with the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. The CMA should be able to document and communicate pertinent information effectively and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff.

Education:
Completion of a Level I - Nurse Aide education program approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC-approved Nurse Aide I competency test. High School diploma or equivalent required.
Licensures, Certifications:
Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
