Summary

The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of the medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients. The role involves providing direct patient care, performing routine administrative duties, and supporting clinical procedures to ensure smooth clinic operations.

Work Performed

  1. Clinical responsibilities: Greeting patients, answering phones, scheduling appointments, taking medical histories, recording vital signs, assisting with procedures, preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic tests, taking electrocardiograms, changing dressings, promoting patient understanding, documenting in patient records, and assisting with medication administration under physician supervision.
  2. Administrative responsibilities: Arranging appointments, checking out patients, scheduling referrals, updating medical records, billing, ordering supplies, and other clerical duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Good customer service skills
  • Ability to lift and transport patients with a stretcher or wheelchair
  • Knowledge of sanitation, infection control, and sterile techniques
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Proficiency in medical terminology and documentation

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Level I: High school diploma or GED; graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Levels II-IV: Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program; certification required; BLS certification required.

Experience

  • Level I: No experience required.
  • Level II: 1 year clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified.
  • Level III: 2 years clinical experience, Certified.
  • Level IV: 3 years clinical experience, Certified.

Licenses, Certifications

  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required for Levels I-IV.
  • BLS certification required.
