Job Description

A Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is responsible for performing physical examinations, utilizing diagnostic testing, making diagnoses, and managing the treatment of common episodic women's health problems. Midwifery care includes the management of primary health screening, health promotion, and the provision of care from adolescence through the lifespan as well as the neonatal period. This includes care related to preconception, pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum recovery, normal newborn recovery, infant feeding including human lactation, comprehensive gynecologic/reproductive/sexual health care, and post-menopausal care.

Work Settings and Procedures

A CNM works in various settings including clinics, ambulatory health centers, and hospitals. They write orders and make rounds in hospital settings. Procedures performed may include insertion of intrauterine pressure catheters, amniotomy, birth maneuvers, episiotomy, laceration repair, pudendal analgesia, newborn circumcision, and insertion of contraceptive devices.

Position Details

This position requires rotation to different work sites and may include evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours. On-call hours may also be required.

Responsibilities
  • Provision of midwifery care including health screening, health promotion, and care from adolescence through the neonatal period.
  • Teaching nursing, midwifery, and medical students, residents, and other health professionals.
  • Participation in research, scholarly activities, and service.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Reporting to a Chair or higher-level administrator.
  • Engaging in teaching, research, and academic advising as applicable.
  • Representing the university on committees.
Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Graduation from an accredited nurse-midwifery program.
  • Certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board and maintenance of certification.
  • Licensure by the State of Florida as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in nurse-midwifery.
  • Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Instructor.

Preferred:

  • New graduates considered after certification and licensure.
  • Experience in full scope practice and tertiary care preferred.
