A Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is responsible for performing physical examinations, utilizing diagnostic testing, making diagnoses, and managing the treatment of common episodic women's health problems. Midwifery care includes the management of primary health screening, health promotion, and the provision of care from adolescence through the lifespan as well as the neonatal period. This includes care related to preconception, pregnancy, labor, birth, postpartum recovery, normal newborn recovery, infant feeding including human lactation, comprehensive gynecologic/reproductive/sexual health care, and post-menopausal care.
A CNM works in various settings including clinics, ambulatory health centers, and hospitals. They write orders and make rounds in hospital settings. Procedures performed may include insertion of intrauterine pressure catheters, amniotomy, birth maneuvers, episiotomy, laceration repair, pudendal analgesia, newborn circumcision, and insertion of contraceptive devices.
This position requires rotation to different work sites and may include evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours. On-call hours may also be required.
