Job summary

Otterbein Sunset House is seeking a part-time Certified Medication Aide to support resident care in a nursing home setting. You will administer prescribed medications under licensed supervision, document observations, and assist with daily care as a CNA/STNA when CMA duties are not required.

Shifts are part-time 1st shift and PRN. The role requires Ohio CMA and CNA/STNA certifications, with PCC EMR experience and strong attention to detail in a compassionate, person-centered environment.

Qualifications

  • Current OH CMA certification or eligibility.
  • OH CNA/STNA certification active and on Nurse Aide Registry.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records (PCC) preferred.
  • CPR certification and ongoing compliance required.
  • Minimum 12 months direct care as CNA/STNA; long-term care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications as ordered by physician with proper documentation.
  • Administer PRN meds only with licensed nurse authorization.
  • Record observations and completed administrations in resident records.
  • Report abnormalities, reactions or refusals to the licensed nurse.
  • Provide direct nursing care as CNA/STNA when not performing CMA duties.
  • Count, administer and document controlled substances; perform other duties.

A Certified Medication Aide administers medications to residents/elders in a nursing home under direction of a licensed nurse. The Certified Medication Aide works as a Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA/STNA when Certified Medication Aide duties are completed or not needed.

Shifts: Part-time 1st Shift and PRN

Key Responsibilities of position are below:

  • Prepare and administer medication as ordered by physician:
    • oral and topical medications
    • nasal drops and sprays
    • ointments to eyes, ears or nose
    • inhalants delivered by inhalers, nebulizers or aerosols that allow for a single dose of a fixed, premeasured amount of mediation
    • rectal and vaginal medications
  • Administer previously ordered pro re nata (PRN) medication only if authorization is obtained from the licensed nurse on duty or on call.
  • Document in a resident’s clinical record:
    • All medications that the Certified Medication Aide personally administered
    • Observations including what the Certified Medication Aide sees, hears or smells
    • Any information that is reported to the Certified Medication Aide by the resident.
  • Report to the licensed nurse:
    • Any abnormalities that would prohibit medication administration.
    • Any reactions and side effects to medications exhibited by a resident.
    • any refusal of a resident to comply with medication administration
  • Perform Treatments.
  • Count, administer and document-controlled substances.
  • Provide direct nursing care to the elders and residents as a Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA/STNA when not needed to perform Certified Medication Aide duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Skills and Requirements

  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt quickly to change.
  • Must be detailed oriented and have excellent literacy and writing, documentation, communications and interpersonal abilities.
  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons who are ill, disabled, elderly and/or emotionally upset.
  • Must be able to communicate in English (speak, hear, write).

Qualifications:

  • Licensure/Certification:
  • Current, active OH Certified Nursing Assistant CNA/STNA Certification. Must be on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records; PCC experience highly preferred
  • Licensure: Ohio active CMA (Certified Medication Aide) certification, CPR and active Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA/STNA certification.
  • Experience: At least 12 months of direct care as a Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA/STNA practice desired; long term care experience preferred.
