POSITION SUMMARY

The primary responsibility of your job is to assist in the administration of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the supervision of the nurse or Director of Nursing Services. You will ensure medication administration follows all relevant standards and regulations governing long-term care facilities. You are delegated the authority and responsibility necessary for carrying out your duties.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Report errors in medication administration.
  • Complete necessary forms, charts, reports, etc.
  • Accurately prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
  • Verify medications brought into the facility are examined and identified.
  • Assist with medication charting.
  • Ensure medications are properly labeled.
  • Document and remove discontinued medications.
  • Ensure medications are returned and reordered as necessary.
  • Measure, record, and report residents' vital signs accurately.
  • Observe and verify medication ingestion or application as directed.
  • Administer medication only with a written, signed, and dated order.
  • Follow guidelines for storage of drugs and biologicals.
  • Participate in resident assessments as needed.
  • Be familiar with medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Licensed Certified Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and examination.

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 months practicing as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • No QMAP certification required.

Specific Requirements

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate to the age-related needs of residents.
  • Deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family, visitors, and the public.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work harmoniously with others.
  • Be knowledgeable of computer systems and office equipment.
  • Pose no health or safety threat to others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work in all areas of the facility.
  • Move intermittently during work hours.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset or hostile individuals.
  • Concentrate, reason, and use good judgment.
  • Assist in evacuations during emergencies if needed.
  • Stand and/or walk 80%-100% of the time.
  • Sit and stoop as necessary.
  • Lift up to 5 lbs. floor to waist approximately 20% of the time; push/pull up to 30 lbs. approximately 60% of the time.
