Job Description: Certified Medical Assistant

The Certified Medical Assistant provides direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the physician's direction.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification from a recognized national professional association such as the American Association of Medical Assistants, American Medical Technologists, National Association of Healthcare Professions, American Registry of Medical Assistants, or National Healthcare Association.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment:
  • Same as above.
Certifications:
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.
Experience REQUIRED:
  • One (1) year of medical assistant work experience within the last three (3) years if not a graduate of a medical assistant program.
  • No work experience required if a graduate of a medical assistant program.
  • Experience with personal computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office and email.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience PREFERRED:
  • Two (2) to three (3) years as a Certified Medical Assistant.
  • Experience in an academic healthcare environment.
Education/training REQUIRED:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Education/training PREFERRED:
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assisting training program (e.g., CAAHEP or ABHES accredited).
Independent Actions:

Functions under supervision of a licensed practitioner, manager, or RN, providing patient care, emotional support, and problem solving in accordance with policies. Requires prior approval for schedule changes, legal issues, and care deviations. May handle medications and supplies.

Additional Requirements:

Work shifts include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Schedules are flexible and may be adjusted as needed.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs, prolonged standing/sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
  • Mental/Sensory: Recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Emotional: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple priorities, adapt to change.
