Medical Assistant Job Description
The Medical Assistant will perform a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to support patient care and clinic operations, including:
- Documenting patient information such as reason for visit, weight, vital signs, screening details, medication review, and relevant medical data using the electronic medical record system.
- Preparing examination and treatment rooms between patient appointments.
- Assisting patients in preparing for their visits, ensuring safety and privacy are maintained.
- Providing direct patient care under the provider’s supervision, including performing EKGs, dressing wounds, and supporting minor surgical procedures and examinations.
- Preparing and administering medications as per policy after demonstrating competency; note that intravenous medication administration is not permitted.
- Carrying out tests and treatments ordered by the provider, following established policies and demonstrating competency.
- Collecting, preparing, and documenting laboratory specimens accurately to facilitate laboratory testing.
- Performing phlebotomy and assisting with laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and quality assurance under supervision.
- Managing clerical duties such as filing reports and maintaining accurate medical records.
- Utilizing electronic medical records and scheduling systems effectively.
- Scheduling appointments, completing referrals, and obtaining pre-authorizations as needed.
- Collecting patient co-payments.
- Assisting with the orientation of new personnel under supervision.
- Managing patient communications, prioritizing provider notifications, and responding to patient inquiries to ensure efficient care delivery.
- Supporting patient education as directed by the provider to enhance understanding of care instructions.
- Inventorying supplies and pharmaceuticals, verifying expiration dates, and ensuring organizational efficiency.
- Transporting non-controlled medications and managing storage areas as necessary.
- Preparing and cleaning medical instruments, following sterilization and disinfection protocols.
- Maintaining infection control standards in room setup and instrument sterilization.
- Monitoring diagnostic equipment to ensure proper operation and scheduling preventive maintenance.
- Participating actively in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
