Job summary

The City of New York, NYPD Information Technology Services Division seeks a Cert IT Administrator (DB) to lead SQL Server database administration across multiple environments, ensuring security, uptime and data integrity. You will supervise a team, implement HA/DR solutions, and collaborate with developers to migrate schemas and data to the platform.

Minimum qualifications include a database administration certification and a degree or equivalent IT experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of database administration experience.
  • A four-year high school diploma with six years of IT experience including database administration.
  • Masters may substitute for one year of DB admin exp. at least one year of DB admin experience.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL Server, databases, security management.
  • Experience with data warehousing and ETL processes; familiarity with data privacy practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team performing SQL Server DBA tasks across development, testing and production environments.
  • Oversee installations, patching, backups, recovery management and schema administration.
  • Design redundant systems and data archiving policies to protect data assets.
  • Monitor data platforms for availability, security, health and recoverability.
  • Build and manage HA & DR architectures (Clustering, Replication, Always On).
  • Migrate schemas and data with application owners to the data platform.
  • Collaborate with development and QA to deliver robust, on-time solutions.
  • Direct and mentor subordinates in testing, development and troubleshooting of DB applications.

Job description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) supports the Department by acquiring, distributing, installing and maintaining Local Area Networks, personal computers, mainframe computers, software, and data communications networks. ITSD also plans and coordinates the implementation of advanced technology.

The selected candidate will:
  • Leads a team who performs SQL Server database administration functions, including maintenance of multiple environments (development, testing and production), patching, troubleshooting, SSIS & SSRS deployments and security management.
  • Leads a team who performs database administration duties, including installations, patching, backup and recovery management, schema management, startup and shutdown.
  • Supervises a team who designs and implement redundant systems, policies and procedures for database recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection, maximum availability and integrity of data assets by assigning and reviewing work of subordinates.
  • Monitor and analyze data platforms to ensure database is available, secure, healthy, efficient and recoverable as per expectations.
  • Build and manage HA & DR architectures like Clustering, Replication and Always on.
  • Implement and manage the physical databases of mission critical systems capacity to determine future storage needs.
  • Collaborate with application owners to develop a seamless process to migrate their schema and data to data platform.
  • Partner with development and quality assurance teams to deliver robust, quality on-time solutions.
  • Directs, provides guidance and assists subordinates in testing, developing and troubleshooting database applications.

Minimum Qualifications

Professional/Vendor Certification(s) in database administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, you must have one of the following:

  1. 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and two years of satisfactory fulltime (not classroom based) experience in database administration. Experience must include database design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management;
  2. 2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience (IT) of which at least two years must have been database administration experience as described in "1" above; OR
  3. 3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above. Undergraduate education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college or university is equivalent to 6 months of information technology experience, but may not be substituted for the required database administration experience. A masters degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of database administration experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) database administration experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
  • Strong understanding of database structures, principles and practices.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2014/2016/2017/2019.
  • Proficiency in SQL Server installation, configuration, patching and database back-up recovery.
  • Knowledgeable with Windows server, Security delegation, Storage components.
  • Solid Knowledge of SQL Server HADR Solution, Data Replication, SSIS and SSRS.
  • Expert experience in platform monitoring, detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • Experienced in database performance tuning and maintenance with outstanding troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Ability to conduct research into infrastructure and database issues, standards and products as required.
  • Experience with data warehouses and Extract Transform Load (ETL).
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and enthusiastic to learn new technologies.
  • Knowledge of 3rd party DBA tools and applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws and comply with data security policies.
  • Technical documentation's skills.
