Qualifications

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) oversees critical projects and technological initiatives within the NYPD. They maintain and enhance the department's IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, and workstations. Notably, the ITSD has rolled out various advancements, such as equipping officers with cellular phones applications and digitizing department forms to improve efficiency.

ITSD's Customer Service Division is seeking a qualified Computer Associate Operations III. Under general supervision the selected candidate will plan an essential role in providing citywide technical diagnostics, active directory administration, queue management, and technical hardware provisioning. This role acts as a primary operational catalyst, balancing immediate service desk demands, remote user troubleshooting, and hands-on maintenance of specialized agency hardware.

The duties and responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, configure, and deploy workstations, servers, printers, and peripherals across assigned Borough facilities or citywide as operation needs dictate.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, inspections, testing and operational health checks on desktops, laptops, printers, and peripherals.
  • Identify developing hardware/software problems, replace failing components, apply approved updates and configuration changes, and document corrective actions to reduce downtime and maintain equipment readiness.
  • Execute large-scale hardware rollouts, lifecycle refreshes, and vendor-supported repairs via workflows such as Dell TechDirect.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, software, and network issues in both standalone and networked environments; leverage remote access tools (e.g, Remote Desktop, Microsoft teams) to perform interventions, minimize end-user downtime, and maintain command operational readiness.
  • Administer Active Directory to manage user accounts, Organization Units (OUs), Security Groups (SGs), data-share folder permissions, and Group Policies; Utilize network administration tools to troubleshoot and resolve domain-joining and network connectivity issues.
  • Maintain precise service tickets, detailed troubleshooting notes, and asset management records to uphold data integrity; Create, revise, and maintain technical documentation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and operational runbooks.
  • Support Information Technology Bureau (ITB) initiatives, strategic technology rollouts, and multi-site field operations both independently and within team environments.
  • Provide supervisors with timely, structured updates on critical system outages, ongoing issues, and project milestones; Maintain strict compliance with departmental confidentiality protocols, anti-corruption policies, and command integrity standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Professional/vendor certification(s) in local area network administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, all candidates must have the following:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and two years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) experience in local area network and/or wide area network planning, design, configuration, installation, implementation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management; or
  2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience of which at least 2 years must have been as described in "1" or
  3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from an accredited college is equivalent to 6 months of experience. A Master's degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college may be substitute for one year of experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory (not classroom based) full-time information technology experience as described in "1" above.

Note: In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements: Incumbents may be required to update existing and/or obtain additional professional industry-standard certification(s) for current and future technical environments(s) in which they may be assigned to work, as determined by the employing agency.

  • Strong understanding of Computer hardware and software, including Windows operating systems, Microsoft-M365, Server 2016/2019/2022, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, and TCP/IP.
