Job summary

Collins is hiring a Certified Lumber Grader to apply WWPA grading rules and identify lumber grades on site. The role requires maintaining a high grading accuracy and collaborating with WWPA inspectors, supervisors, and fellow graders to ensure quality and value in our lumber products.

The ideal candidate will hold a grading certification (NGR F/C/A preferred) and comply with safety regulations while staying current on market values and product specifications.

Responsibilities

• Stay informed about current lumber markets and product values.
• Mark lumber for trimming to maximize market value and verify stamp legibility.
• Report planer defects promptly to the supervisor.
• Assist in inspections to ensure accuracy and profitability of units.
• Support development of uncertified graders.
• Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
• On-site attendance is essential for listed duties.
• Travel may be required for training or inspections.

Position Summary:

The Certified Lumber Grader holds grading certification(s) and applies the requisite grading rules of the Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) to identify grades of lumber.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Comply with safety standards at all times and correct/report any observed safety hazards.
• Assign grades in a manner that is consistent with the guidelines established by the company and the WWPA.
• Maintain a grading accuracy of 95 percent in all products.
• Communicate with and learn from other certified lumber graders and the Dry End Supervisor, Quality Control Coordinator, and WWPA inspectors for continued education.
• Remain up to date on current lumber markets and product values.
• Mark lumber for trimming to obtain the highest marketable value from the material and verify stamp legibility.
• Report any planer manufacturing defects immediately to department supervisor.
• Cooperate with the inspection of completed units to ensure accuracy and profitability.
• Assist in the successful development of uncertified graders.
• Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.
• On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities.
• Periodic travel may be required for training or product inspections.

Position Requirements:

Must meet position requirements to be considered a candidate for this position.

• Possess and maintain at least one grading certification. The National Grading Rules (NGR) Certificate F, “All NGR Grades;” Certificate C, “Commons;” and Certificate A, “Shop” are preferred.
• Ability to follow all company, state and federal safety rules when performing required job duties.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal history check and a pre-employment drug screening.

Environmental Conditions:

May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and extreme temperatures.

Required Personal Protective Equipment:

Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times. Examples of PPE which may be required include high visibility garments, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, and a face shield.
